So, you’re thinking about trying pickleball? First off—welcome! You're about to step into one of the most fun, social, and downright addictive sports out there. Whether you're here because your friends won't stop raving about it or you’re just curious about what all the buzz is about, this guide is your one-stop shop for everything you need to know before stepping onto the court.
I’m here to walk you through the rules, the must-have gear, and the unspoken etiquette that'll have you feeling like a seasoned player in no time. Think of this as me giving you the inside scoop over a cup of coffee (or maybe after a game and a cold drink). So, let's dive right in!
What is Pickleball? A Quick Overview
Imagine tennis, badminton, and ping-pong had a baby—that’s pickleball. It’s played on a smaller court (about one-third the size of a tennis court), using solid paddles and a lightweight, perforated plastic ball. You can play singles or doubles, and trust me, the doubles games are where the real magic happens.
The best part about pickleball is it is perfectly scaled for every ability. You can have kids, teenagers and retirees on the court together and everyone not only gets a great workout but has fun. Most social sessions feature rotating games of doubles so you will get a chance to play with and against a wide variety of people. No matter your current level of athleticism dont fear giving pickleball a go. The game has so many aspects to it that allow everyone to shine. I have played some fantastic games against those with incredible strategy and cunning tactics which more than make up for a lack of movement.
Pickleball Rules Explained for Beginners
Alright, let’s talk about how the game works. Don’t worry, the rules are straightforward, and you’ll pick them up quickly.
1. Understanding the Court Layout
The pickleball court is 6.1M wide and 13.41M long. There’s a net in the middle, of course, but the most important part to remember is the Non-Volley Zone, aka The Kitchen. This is a 2M area on both sides of the net where you’re not allowed to volley (hit the ball out of the air). Dont be concerned by the numbers the court is the same size as a badminton court (the kitchen is slightly different) making it not that large to cover (well short of a tennis court or squash court). Also bear in mind most social play is doubles so you are really only covering hald the court.
2. Serving: Keep it Simple
- Serves are made underhand with the paddle below the waist.
- You have to serve diagonally across the court.
- The ball must clear the kitchen and land in the opposite service box.
Oh, and you only get one serve attempt—no second chances here my tennis friends!
3. The Double Bounce Rule
This rule trips people up, but it’s simple:
- The serve must bounce once on the opponent’s side.
- Then, the return must bounce again on the serving side.
- After that, it’s fair game, and volleys are allowed (except in the kitchen).
4. Scoring: It’s Easier Than You Think
- Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by 2.
- Only the serving team can score points (like in volleyball or the old squash scoring system)
- In doubles, both players on a team get a chance to serve before it switches.
Essential Pickleball Gear for Beginners
Let’s be honest—playing with the right gear makes a huge difference. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but having the right equipment can help you play better and feel more comfortable. Usually on your first go they will loan out a paddle (be warned they likely arent the best and we do suggest purchasing your own later).
1. The Best Paddle for Beginners: Kasaca Paddles
If you’re just starting out, I highly recommend grabbing a Kasaca paddle. They’re lightweight, super comfortable, and give you excellent control over your shots. As a beginner, control is way more important than power. Plus, Kasaca paddles look sleek on the court. Kasaca in my oppinion are the best value paddles. Their Aero Spike and Aero Swipe are some of the best value intermediate / advanced paddles I have come across on the market. The Kasaca red and blue set is perfect for starting out with a friend. You get two great paddles which are regular size (surprisingly most loaner paddles are smaller), comfortable grip (not too short) and edged for extra protection.
2. Game-Ready Footwear: ASICS Gel Tactic & Salming Eagle
Shoes are non-negotiable in pickleball. You need something that supports quick lateral movements.
- ASICS Gel Tactic is a top pick for outdoor courts. They’re stable, cushioned, and designed for racket sports.
- Salming Eagle shoes are fantastic for indoor play. They’re lightweight and grip the court perfectly.
Trust me, running around in running shoes? Bad idea. Get the right shoes, and your knees and ankles will thank you. These shoes are two of our best-value pickleball shoes when you dont want to spend a fortune. If you want a versatile shoe look at the Asics Gel game as it is also suitable for indoor play (not the most optimal shoe however when starting out it will more than get the job done).
3. Stay Cool with Sparms Sleeves
If you’re playing outdoors, sun protection is key. Sparms Sun Protection Sleeves are a lifesaver. They’re light, breatheable, and protect your arms from harmful UV rays. Plus, they wick away sweat, keeping you comfortable during those long rallies. They come in a range of colours and patterns (new to our site in 2025!). Unlike applying sticky sunscreen these can be a great functional tool that keep you cool and not burnt to a crisp.
4. Must-Have Accessories
- Salming Overgrip: Keeps your paddle grip dry and secure.
- Salming Wristbands: Perfect for wiping away sweat during intense games.
These little things might not seem like much, but they can make a huge difference during a match.
Pickleball Etiquette: Play Nice and Have Fun
Pickleball is known for being social and welcoming, but there are some unspoken rules to keep in mind.
1. Be Respectful
Always call your shots fairly. If you're unsure whether a ball was in or out, give the benefit of the doubt to your opponent. And don’t forget to tap paddles (or wave if you prefer) after a game. It's tradition.
2. Share the Court
If you're playing on public courts, be mindful of other players. Rotate off after games if people are waiting. Many courts have a paddle rack system—drop your paddle in to hold your spot in the next game.
3. Play Safe
Get in a warm up, dont try for impossible crosscourts that run close to your partners face and as always have fun!
Beginner Pickleball Tips to Improve Fast
1. Focus on Control, Not Power
Many beginners try to smash the ball, but pickleball is all about finesse. Aim for consistent, controlled shots. Unlike squash hitting the ball hard only leads to it flying out. Pickleball is all about making more balls than your opponent, always think how can I make my opponent play one more ball.
2. Master the Dink Shot
Learn how to dink—a soft shot that just clears the net and lands in the kitchen. This shot will become your best friend for controlling the pace of the game. The third shot drop (not something you are trying to do when starting out) is where the service team tries to play the third shot short into the kitchen so both partners can push up to the kitchen line.
3. Play with Better Players
It might feel intimidating, but playing with more experienced players will help you improve much faster. Plus, most pickleball players are friendly and love helping newbies.
